k-mos-two-headed-distortion
K-MOS Two Headed Distortion

K-MOS is an original circuit designed using a 4069 CMOS chip. The chip was found in an old college radio station mixer that was acquired many years ago and sat in the attic waiting for something to happen. I pulled it out earlier this year and looked for interesting bits that could possibly be used to make an effect. The 4069 chips in it were pulled, along with some vactrols (yet to be used) and research began.

Distortion seemed to be the most obvious use, and after trying a few variations I settled on a hard distortion. Trying to tame it with a knob didn't work, so I opted to simply have one knob for volume. After thinking about it more I decided to add a second mode that distorts even more. This second mode (or head) approaches fuzz-like territory, but uses no transistors, only extra stages of the 4069. It offers a gated effect, similar to what a bias control does with a fuzz. An internal trimpot was added to adjust the amount of gating. It worked great with humbuckers, but another internal trim was added to increase the input gain which accommodates lower output pickups. So, the K-MOS provides two modes of hard distortion, which seems to evoke sounds reminiscent of 80's metal, but is unique in it's own way.

The name comes from a local Yurok legend of a two-headed serpent that lived at the mouth of the Klamath River (a strong power site well worth a visit). I had read about the legend and once met a Yurok man who told me the creatures' name was Kamos (not sure of the exact spelling), so I thought this was a great opportunity to name my pedal after one of my favorite local legends, and it's somewhat close to CMOS, so it makes sense to me. Here I present K-MOS, the two-headed distortion.

The art was drawn from my concept by a friend of mine, Danny Graham. He lives in Southern California and plays in a band called, Fever Dog. They had toured with a band I play in, The Freeks. He had been working his way up in the world of rock art and had recently produced tour shirt art for Metallica, based on The Thing That Should Not Be. I thought it was a great opportunity to pay him for some cool art that makes my pedal stand out.
